5 Tips for Improving Your Workspace

You could say that I’m a bit of a procrastinator but I’ve been working on it. I’m also one of those people that usually has so much clutter on my desk, BUT if you ask me where anything is I know exactly where to go. Organized chaos.

Well, I’ve made some changes to make my workspace work better for me. I made it more organized, a more productive space, and I love it.

When we moved into our new house this summer I got rid of my ugly corner desk, went to Ikea and bought myself some nice drawers and a butcher block desktop…it’s the best! It’s a pretty, light, bright space with all of my favorite things and room for everything! I decided to put together some tips for you to make your office/desk area a place where you will enjoy and maybe even a place of inspiration.

1. Find a desk that suits your style with lots of drawers and organizational space. My corner desk was never cutting it for me, I always felt kind of claustrophobic. Once I got my new desk, I had plenty of space for everything. On each side I have 5 nice sized drawers and the top of my desk has all of my organizer binders, planners, and reference books. I don’t feel squeezed in anymore!

2. Get yourself some pretty office supplies. I know this sounds really weird but hear me out. I love stationary and all office supplies in general but I went out and bought new supplies for my new desk. They were all my favorite colors, patterns, etc. I have my grandma’s pen holder there too. It’s much more pleasant being at my desk for long periods of time when I have pretty things to look at. Humans are visual people by nature so why not just give yourself some pretty things for your desk. Add a little vase of flowers too!

I went to the store and bought a cheap cork board, then covered the middle with some pretty fabric (it has vintage cameras on it…one of my favorite things) and ta-da! It’s much more pleasant to look at than just plain cork. This was a super easy and cheap way to spruce things up.

4. Place pictures of your favorite people and places near you. I have pictures of my family and the beach in my work area because I’ll never get tired of looking at those. I also put thank you notes from my clients up on my cork board. Sometimes we need a little reminder of why we do what we do, they’re a great pick-me-up.

5. Lastly, take some time every couple of days to just clear out the clutter. Keeping things put away and the top of your desk accessible is super important. When it’s cleaned off you’ll feel better. I keep a workflow board near my desk that I can easily check off my tasks. One of those tasks is to file client papers etc. I stick to my workflow board pretty well so this has helped a ton! You can check out the same workflow board that I use here. It’s digital so you can have it printed, frame it and use dry erase markers.

I hope these few tips help you create a more pleasant workspace!
